Protection gas brazing
Protection gas brazing is a supplement of vacuum brazing
and is always applied when a high-vacuum atmosphere is not
suitable for a certain brazing operation. This is the case
for bulk materials or filler metals being made of elements
with a very high vapour pressure.
A common application is the high-temperature brazing of copper
parts. At temperatures above 1000°C copper tends to evaporate
under high vacuum conditions. By using a protection gas atmosphere
(Argon, Nitrogen e.g.) this undesired effect can be excluded.
The water tubes made of copper with stainless steel fittings
are a typical application example. At brazing temperature
of 1040°C an Argon-atmosphere prevents massive evaporation
of the copper.
